re­it­er­ated the US sup­port to In­dia’s mem­ber­ship for the NSG, China on the 16th May re­act­ing to this state­ment stressed the es­sen­tial­ity of mem­bers be­ing sig­na­to­ries of Nu­clear Non Pro­lif­er­a­tion Treaty (NPT).

The Chi­nese For­eign Min­istry spokesper­son Hong Lei in a press brief­ing stated, “The Nu­clear Sup­pli­ers’ Group has made se­ri­ous po­lit­i­cal and tech­ni­cal stan­dards with re­gard to ac­cept­ing new mem­bers and one com­pul­sory stan­dard is that NSG mem­bers must be sig­na­tory states to the NPT”. Hong Lei fur­ther em­pha­sised that ‘like other non-pro­lif­er­a­tion regimes, the NSG was based on the NPT.

Moodi will head to Mex­ico on June 9. On the way back, he may stop over in Ger­many, but that is not likely to be a bi­lat­eral visit.—SABAH
