Ghani for wel­fare of trans­ves­tite com­mu­nity

PE­SHAWAR—Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa Spe­cial As­sis­tant to Chief Min­is­ter Mush­taq Ghani on Mon­day said a com­pre­hen­sive pol­icy is be­ing chalked out for wel­fare of trans­ves­tite com­mu­nity and to pro­vide them em­ploy­ment and bet­ter health fa­cil­i­ties.

Speak­ing to a del­e­ga­tion of trans­ves­tite com­mu­nity here at Deputy Com­mis­sioner Of­fice, he said a high level com­mit­tee com­pris­ing Deputy Com­mis­sioner, Secretary So­cial Wel­fare, Secretary Tech­ni­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and high level of­fi­cials has been con­sti­tuted to hold meet­ing with trans­ves­tite com­mu­nity and form the pol­icy in con­sul­ta­tion with them.

He told the del­e­ga­tion that KP govern­ment is al­lo­cat­ing bud­get for fi­nan­cial as­sis­tance of trans­ves­tite in the pro­vin­cial fis­cal bud­get, ad­ding that first the ex­act num­ber pop­u­la­tion of trans­ves­tites would be de­ter­mined in the prov­ince and later a monthly stipend would be given them.

Ghani fur­ther said that a sug­ges­tion to reg­is­ter the trans­ves­tite com­mu­nity with so­cial wel­fare depart­ment and then con­sti­tu­tion of an en­dow­ment fund for them is also be con­sid­ered.

He as­sured the del­e­ga­tion that free of cost treat­ment and pri­vate rooms would be pro­vided to them in all govern­ment hos­pi­tal of the prov­ince, while al­ter­nate em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties would also be ex­plored.

He said that pro­tec­tion of every­body es­pe­cially trans­ves­tite is the re­spon­si­bil­ity of the govern­ment and any lethargy in this re­gard would not be tol­er­ated. On the oc­ca­sion, the del­e­ga­tion of trans­ves­tites de­manded a res­i­den­tial colony, pro­tec­tion of lives.
