6.3 mag­ni­tude earth­quake hits off In­done­sia, no tsunami alert

JAKARTA—A 6.3-mag­ni­tude earth­quake struck in the Molucca Sea in off north­ern In­done­sia early Wed­nes­day, US seis­mol­o­gists said, but no tsunami warn­ing was is­sued.

The quake struck at 3:15 am (1915 GMT Tues­day) at a depth of 38 kilo­me­tres (24 miles), about 126 kilo­me­tres from Ter­nate city on Halma­hera is­land, the US Ge­o­log­i­cal Sur­vey said. The quake struck far from land, and the Pa­cific Tsunami Warn­ing Cen­ter said no tsunami warn­ing was is­sued.

In­done­sia ex­pe­ri­ences fre­quent seis­mic and vol­canic ac­tiv­ity due to its po­si­tion on the Pa­cific “Ring of Fire,” where tec­tonic plates col­lide. —APP
