Dr Asim seeks Canadian sup­port for his re­lease

KARACHI—For­mer fed­eral min­is­ter Dr Asim Hussain who is also a Canadian na­tional, has sought the Canadian gov­ern­ment’s help to seek his re­lease from per­sis­tent im­pris­on­ment. On his re­quest the act­ing Canadian High Com­mis­sioner came to Karachi from Islamabad to meet him and know de­tails of be­ing in Rangers cus­tody.

A de­bate had started here whether the Canadian diplo­mat can re­ally in­ter­fere in crim­i­nal cases of such se­ri­ous na­ture as mas­sive cor­rup­tion, and em­bez­zle­ment of gov­ern­ment funds. Dr Asim, a close friend of for­mer Pres­i­dent and PPP leader Asif Zar­dari, is charged with em­bez­zling Rs 452 bil­lion through il­le­gal land grab­bing, and unau­tho­rised al­lot­ment of plots in sev­eral city ar­eas.
