Voice of the People

Ramazan & our media

Pakistan Observer - - OPINION - AFREEN MIRZA

Ramazan is the only month when we used to see people sincerely following the teaching of Holy Quran and Sunnah, but this practice of Muslims has also been affected by our own media. Live transmissions of Sehr and Iftar have affected the prayers of Muslims. Believe it or not, people instead of praying, sit in front of their television sets and watch those stupid overacting by those glamorous lady hosts and impish presenters of the so-called religious programmes. The very existence of these hosts and hostesses negate the basic philosophy of Islam to discourage means of seduction and immoral pursuits, especially during the sacred environs of Ramazan. These channel owners need to think that what are they doing? Just to hunt for some ‘ratings’, they do these kinds of things like distribution of gifts in an indecent manner or calling celebrities who have no idea about the religious topic on which they have to speak about. We all need to understand that everything is not done for the purpose of ‘rating’. The viewers who just sit and watch the glamorous shows of beauty parades, also need to understand that wasting all this time instead of going for prayers and instead viewing these shows are against the spirit of Islam and the philosophy of Ramazan and fasting. You would not be asked questions like which celebrity hosted which channels show? Or which channels Ramazan transmissions attained the highest TRPs? So please think about it and start preparing for the actual questions you would have to answer in the life hereafter. — Karachi
