Polio free Pakistan

Pakistan Observer - - OPINION - RAHIMA TAUQEER

Two years back, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared and certified South East Asia as polio free region, but this was not at all a good news for Pakistan and Afghanistan. India was also declared as a polio-free nation. There are just three countries in the world that still have polio patients and sadly Pakistan is also counted in this auspicious list besides Afghanistan and Nigeria.

It is a disease caused due to unawareness of people just because they don’t consider the administration of polio vaccine necessary for their children and avoid providing them with polio drops. They don’t even have idea that it is a need of every child so as to continue a normal life when grown up. There is a vast number of people who are now quiet helpless for their children and feel guilty just because they did not consider it important for their young ones and as a result their children now suffer from this disease. It is very sad that there is no cure for this disease. Everyone needs to understand that this is not only a need but basically a right of every child.

The government of Pakistan should create awareness about this disease among people all over Pakistan because this is one of most serious issues in our country. Although the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) declared 2 years ago that this disease would completely be eliminated throughout the country before the year 2014.

The Federal government as well as Provincial government of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa must create awareness among citizens living in the Province to convince the people that the government wants to eradicate polio from the country without intending to harm the people as it is a need and basic right and a step towards a polio-free Pakistan in near future. —Karachi
