Shakar Baela embankment to save people from floods
MUZAFFARGARH—Provincial Minister for Social Welfare Haroon Sultan Bukhari said construction of embankment at river Indus near Shakar Baela would surely help save people from devastation of floods. He was addressing a public meeting at Shakar Baela here on Saturday. The minister said people of the both sides of the river were very important for him, adding that the embankment would not affect any body.
DCO Shoukat Ali also highlighted benefits of the embankment and said it would save people from floods. Meanwhile, it is reported that Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Jawad Akram Friday said the PDMA was making all out efforts to cope with floods besides rescue and relief measures during the upcoming monsoon season.
Talking to APP, the Director General PDMA said the Punjab government always allocated huge funds to cope with the situation in case of any calamity. “The PDMA has decided to get the help of Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) in order to monitor situation of all the rivers of the province through satellite,” he said.
He said a modern software had also been developed through which information would be obtained regarding flow of water and its impact on the surrounding areas. The DG said as soon as the SUPARCO representatives informed the authorities about danger of flood in any area, or city, the control room would immediately share the information with the authorities concerned who would forward instructions to the district administrations so that they could take precautionary measures.
He said the scientific alarming system would also help the PDMA in minimizing the loss of life and property in high risk areas. The district administrations of the province had been ordered to immediately eliminate encroachments from the banks of water courses, he said. Officers showing any negligence or laxity will not be tolerated, he warned.—DNA
