SC reserves verdict against mily courts death sentences
ISLAMABAD—The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday has reserved its judgment on five appeals against Peshawar High Court ruling given in cases regarding death sentences announced by Military Courts.
A five member SC bench comprising Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Manzoor Ahmed Malik and Justice Faisal Arab heard 17 appeals against death sentences announced by Military Courts.
Top Court reserved judgment over appeals of Haider Ali, Qari Zahir Gul, Faiz Zaman Khan and facilitators of Army Public School attack Taj Muhammad and Ateeq-ur-Rehman.
Meanwhile the Supreme Court has summoned the records of Military Court judgments till next Monday for death row convicts Jameel-ur-Rehman, Aslam Khan, Taj Gul, Nasir Khan and Qari Zubair. Top Court directed that lawyers of the accused should be given access to the record of these five cases in Attorney General Office in presence of military officers. Renowned lawyer Asma Jehangir, Abdul Latif Afridi, Colonel retired Muhammad Ikram had challenged the Peshawar High Court verdicts who had upheld the Military Court judgment.
SC was informed by the Additional Attorney General that record of 11 cases out of 17 has been presented in the Court. During the course of hearing Asma Jehangir argued that Military Courts rulings in these cases is contrary to the section 81, 87 of the Pakistan Army Act and violation of the Article 10-A of the constitution..
