PDMAs di­rected to un­der­take mea­sur­ers to avoid rain losses

ISLAMABAD—The Na­tional Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Au­thor­ity (NDMA) Thurs­day di­rected Provin­cial Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Au­thor­i­ties (PDMAs) for tak­ing all pos­si­ble pre­cau­tion­ary mea­sures to avoid losses in the on­go­ing pre-mon­soon spell af­ter the Pak­istan Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Depart­ment (PMD) forecast more than 20 per­cent ex­tra down­pour this year.

The au­thor­ity alerted all the de­part­ments con­cerned to get ready for all kind of sit­u­a­tions so that losses to lives and prop­erty could be avoided dur­ing the pre-mon­soon sea­son. “All res­cue and re­lief agen­cies, de­part­ments are re­quired to be sen­si­tized to re­main ready to re­spond on a short no­tice,” NDMA said in a let­ter writ­ten to all the con­cerned.

The au­thor­ity, in the let­ter, asked PDMA Pun­jab, PDMA Sindh, PDMA Balochis­tan, PDMA Khy­ber Pukhtunkhwa, SDMA Azad Jammu and Kash­mir, GBDMA Gil­git-Baltistan, and FATA FDMA for adopt­ing preven­tive mea­sures in the cur­rent rain spell. Ac­cord­ing to a spokesman of PMD, the pre-mon­soon rain was ex­pected over up­per parts of the coun­try dur­ing next 24 hours.

He said that the mon­soon cur­rents were pen­e­trat­ing in up­per Pun­jab and Kash­mir, while a fresh west­erly wave was also likely to ap­proach up­per parts of the coun­try in next 24 hours.

Be­sides, rain is ex­pected at scat­tered places in Rawalpindi, Gu­jran­wala, La­hore, Sar­godha, Faisal­abad, Pe­shawar, Mar­dan, Ko­hat and Islamabad dur­ing the pe­riod. Whereas, Iso­lated heavy falls are also ex­pected in Rawalpindi, Gu­jran­wala di­vi­sions and Islamabad on Thurs­day night. The spokesman fur­ther in­formed that two good rains of pre-mon­soon were likely to oc­cur in the com­ing week.

Mean­while, it is re­ported that death toll re­ported on Wed­nes­day wind­storm and rains that lashed dif­fer­ent parts of Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa have reached to eight while over 100 sus­tained in­juries on Thurs­day. Roofs of many houses, other build­ings, walls, sign­boards, power py­lons and trees were fallen due to wind­storm in Pe­shawar, Mar­dan, Bannu, Now­shera, Charsadda, Malakand, Dir, Swat, Khy­ber Agency and Mohmand Agency, re­ported a pri­vate news chan­nel.

Ac­cord­ing to Res­cue 1122 sources, two peo­ple in­clud­ing a child were killed in Pe­shawar, two women and a child lost their lives in Mar­dan, while one per­son was killed and 50 in­jured in Now­shera. Emer­gency was im­posed in the hos­pi­tals of wind­storm af­fected dis­tricts. A camp for in­ter­nally dis­placed per­sons (IDPs) in Fron­tier Re­gion (FR) was also dam­aged in the wind­storm. Two dis­placed chil­dren lost their lives when roof of a house col­lapsed in Bannu Town­ship.

The Bannu Health Depart­ment said over 50 in­jured were brought to Khal­ifa Gul Nawaz Hospi­tal af­ter the wind­storm. An­other per­son re­ceived in­juries when wall of a house col­lapsed in Safi area of Mohmand Agency. Pe­shawar Elec­tric Sup­ply Com­pany (PESCO) said that 600 feed­ers have been dam­aged in the wind­storm in dif­fer­ent parts of KP.—APP
