Violence against women on increase in country: NCHR Chairman

Pakistan Observer - - TWIN CITIES -

ISLAMABAD—Chairman of National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) Justice (Retd) Ali Nawaz Chowhan has said that violence against women is on increase throughout the country. Justice (retd) Chowhan, in a statement here, strongly condemned the incidents of violence against women, particularly in Abbottabad and Gujranwala.

“The civilized societies do not have such a bad situation as we are witnessing presently,” he added.

The NCHR, he said, was deeply concerned over the issue and it was organizing consultative workshops to recommend necessary amendments in Pakistan Penal Code to curb the violence against women.

He also asked the departments concerned for strict implementation of existing laws protecting women against violence.

The local bodies were now in place and they should address that issue in their respective constituencies, he added. It was also the duty of Pesh-Imams to highlight the Islamic principles on benign treatment of women, whether they are wives, daughters or mothers, Ali Nawaz advised.—APP
