Alarming increase in crime

Pakistan Observer - - OPINION - HASSAN SIDDIQUI

I would like to bring to the notice of the concerned authorities the increasing problem of crimes and some measures to curtail this problem. There are multiple reasons behind the rapid increase in crime rate. Firstly increasing poverty and sky high inflation has driven the deprived citizens to adopt illegal means. Secondly inefficiency of the police force to curtail the rampant increases in crime. Moreover, easy availability of weapons has made it easier for young men to get hold of weapons for committing crime with impunity like mobile snatching.

This rapid increase in crime rate has created air of insecurity that prevails in the city, as the law and order situation fails. Moreover, it also affects our economy as it deviates the attention of foreign direct investment due to the feelings of insecurity to invest in such unfavourable atmosphere. There are some measures that should be taken to curtail this problem; firstly the Government should take pertinent steps for creating job opportunities for the unemployed angry youth and easy loan programmes. Moreover, the police department must be made efficient. The widening gap between the haves and have-nots also needs to be curtailed by revisiting economic policies and introducing socio-economic justice at all levels. — Karachi
