USAID mak­ing ef­forts to help al­le­vi­ate ru­ral poverty

FAISALABAD—USAID is mak­ing se­ri­ous ef­forts to al­le­vi­ate ru­ral poverty by help­ing Pak­istan to rein­vig­o­rate its agriculture on mod­ern sci­en­tific lines, said Zachray Harken­rider Con­sul Gen­eral of US Con­sulate Gen­eral Lahore.

He was talk­ing to a del­e­ga­tion of the Faisalabad Cham­ber of Com­merce & In­dus­try (FCCI) that met him un­der the lead­er­ship of its Pres­i­dent Chaudhry Muham­mad Nawaz. The del­e­ga­tion was com­prised of Se­nior Vice Pres­i­dent Syed Zia Alam­dar Hus­sain, En­gi­neer Suhail Bin Rashid and Sh. Ab­dul Qayyum.

Mr. Zachray Harken­rider said that sus­tained Agriculture growth is im­per­a­tive for a coun­try like Pak­istan to re­solve its di­verse so­cioe­co­nomic prob­lems.

He told that USAID Pro­gram has pro­vided en­ergy ef­fi­cient Pumps at sub­si­dized rates to the farm­ers. “It not only helped en­ergy starved Pak­istan to save 400 MW of elec­tric­ity but also trimmed their cost of pro­duc­tion”, he added.

The US Con­sul Gen­eral fur­ther told that USAID is or­ga­niz­ing Con­fer­ences on the im­por­tance of So­lar En­ergy and pos­si­bil­i­ties to launch Joint-Ven­tures in Agriculture Sec­tor. “Th­ese Con­fer­ences will also help Pak­istan to sta­bi­lize its econ­omy on sus­tained ba­sics”, he added.

Ear­lier Ch. Muham­mad Nawaz, Pres­i­dent, FCCI ex­pressed sat­is­fac­tion over the bi­lat­eral eco­nomic co­op­er­a­tion be­tween the 2 coun­tries and said that we must ex­plore new av­enues of co­op­er­a­tion to give a quan­tum jump to our mu­tual trades. He said that US should also gave ac­cess to Pak­ist .—
