NDMA di­rects PDMAs for mea­sur­ers to avoid losses

IS­LAM­ABAD—Na­tional Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Au­thor­ity (NDMA) on Fri­day di­rected the con­cerned to take nec­es­sary mea­sures to avoid losses of lives and dam­age to prop­erty in­fra­struc­ture dur­ing the up­com­ing rain spell. “All res­cue and re­lief agen­cies, de­part­ments are re­quired to be sen­si­tized to re­main ready to re­spond at a short no­tice,” said a spokesman of NDMA while tak­ing to APP.

Ac­cord­ing to Pak­istan Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Depart­ment (PMD) rain with iso­lated heavy falls ac­com­pa­nied by wind­storm are ex­pected in Is­lam­abad, Rawalpindi, Gu­jran­wala, La­hore, Sar­godha, Faisal­abad, Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mar­dan, Kohat, Bannu, D.I Khan , Muzaf­farabad, Mir­pur, Poonch Kur­ram, Ba­jaur, Mohmand, Khy­ber, Orakzai, North and South agen­cies dur­ing next 48 hours.

1The Fed­eral Flood Com­mis­sion (FFC) Fri­day said that River Kabul was flow­ing in medium flood at Warsak and low flood at Now­shera. Ac­cord­ing to daily FFC re­port presently, all main rivers in­clud­ing In­dus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sut­lej were flow­ing nor­mal. The ac­tual river flows and reser­voir in­di­cates that Tar­bela and Mangla reser­voirs are at el­e­va­tions of 1508.04 feet and 1215.05 feet re­spec­tively, which are 41.96 feet and 26.95 feet be­low their re­spec­tive Max­i­mum Con­ser­va­tion Lev­els of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.

The com­bined live stor­age ca­pac­ity of Tar­bela, Chashma & Mangla reser­voirs is 9.720 MAF as com­pared to last year’s 8.968 MAF. Ac­cord­ing to Flood Fore­cast­ing Divi­sion, La­hore, yes­ter­day’s trough of West­erly Wave over North of Afghanistan lies over North­east­ern Afghanistan and ad­join­ing ar­eas.

Well marked Sea­sonal Low lies over North­east­ern Balochis­tan with its trough ex­tend­ing North­east­wards, whereas moist cur­rent from Bay of Ben­gal is pen­e­trat­ing into up­per parts of the coun­try upto 2000 feet and is likely to in­ten­sify dur­ing the next 24 hours. Flood Fore­cast­ing Divi­sion, La­hore pre­dicted iso­lated thun­der­show­ers may oc­cur over North and North­east­ern Pun­jab (Rawalpindi, Gu­jran­wala & La­hore Di­vi­sions) and Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa (Malakand & Hazara Di­vi­sions) in­clud­ing up­per catch­ments of all ma­jor rivers dur­ing the next 24 hours.

Scat­tered thun­der­storm/rain with iso­lated heavy falls is likely to oc­cur over up­per catch­ments of all ma­jor rivers dur­ing the pe­riod from 2nd- 4th July 2016. Wide­spread thun­der­storm/rain of mod­er­ate in­ten­sity with iso­lated heavy falls and one or two very heavy falls along with wind­storm, may also oc­cur over Sahi­wal, La­hore, Gu­jran­wala, Faisal­abad, Sar­godha, Rawalpindi, D.G. Khan, Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu and D.I. Khan Di­vi­sions, be­sides, ur­ban flood­ing in big cities and flash flood­ing in vul­ner­a­ble ar­eas, dur­ing the same pe­riod. No Sig­nif­i­cant rain­fall event has been re­ported by the Flood Fore­cast­ing Divi­sion, La­hore dur­ing the past 24 hours.
