Revamping of water, sanitation sector on cards
LAHORE—Consultative session to discuss revamping/restructuring of water and sanitation sector was held on Friday here at P&D Complex. Member Punjab Planning & Development Board Agha Waqar Javed welcomed the participants and gave them an overview of the session. Addressing the Session, Punjab Chairman Planning & Development Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan said that as per Drinking Water Policy, “The government, while recognizing that access to safe drinking water is the basic human right of every citizen and that it is the responsibility of the state to ensure its provision to all citizens, is committed for adequate quantity of safe drinking water to the entire population at an affordable cost and in an equitable, efficient and sustainable manner”.
He also said that a reform unit will be made for WASA which will be administered by Secretary HUD & PHE. A detailed presentation was made by Secretary HUD & PHED, Punjab on Functioning & Challenges of WASA’s. Following that presentations were made by Abid Hussain on International Best Practices & Private sector perspective on potential solutions of water and sanitation sector by Mujatba Jamal.
It was also discussed that according to the Punjab Growth Strategy, the Government of the Punjab aim is to provide clean drinking water and adequate Sanitation facilities to the people. It is one of the priority area as more than 50 per cent diseases are water borne diseases. Currently, the service level of water utilities in Punjab is not satisfactory due to Poor Water Governance & low institutional capacity, Rapid Population Growth & Climate Change Effects.
