System of lease for mineral exploration reviewed
SALIM AHMED LAHORE—Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif presided over a high-level meeting here on Sunday to review the proposed legal framework for improving lease system for exploration of mineral reserves at a large scale. Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that an effective legal framework is of vital importance for regulating the system of lease of mineral reserves. He said that effective legal framework for lease will promote the culture of modern mining and use of modern technology. He said that capacity building of concerned institutions is also necessary for benefiting from mineral reserves. He said that the institutions relating to mining will have to give results.
The Chief Minister said that besides Minerals Department, reorganization of Environment Department is also necessary. He directed that services of experts should be acquired for running Minerals and Environment Departments in a professional manner. Shehbaz Sharif directed that comprehensive and solid recommendations should be presented for evolving an effective legal framework for improving lease system for exploring mineral reserves. Secretary Minerals gave a briefing with regard to important features of proposed legal framework. Provincial Ministers Rana Sanaullah, Ch. Sher Ali, Chief Secretary, Secretaries Minerals, Industries, Law, DG Environment and concerned officials attended the meeting.
