In­dus, Kabul rivers run in low, medium flood

ISLAMABAD—The Fed­eral Flood Com­mis­sion (FFC) on Mon­day said the River In­dus was flow­ing in low flood in Tar­bela-Chashma Reach with ris­ing trend, while the River Kabul was in medium flood in WarsakNow­shera Reach. Ac­cord­ing to the daily FFC re­port, other main rivers in­clud­ing Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sut­lej were flow­ing nor­mal.

The ac­tual river flows and reser­voir el­e­va­tions in­di­cated that Tar­bela and Mangla reser­voirs were at el­e­va­tions of 1511.08 feet and 1216.85 feet re­spec­tively, which are 38.92 feet & 25.15 feet be­low their re­spec­tive Max­i­mum Con­ser­va­tion Lev­els of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.

The com­bined live stor­age ca­pac­ity of Tar­bela, Chashma and Mangla reser­voirs is 9.970 MAF as com­pared to last year’s 9.098 MAF. Ac­cord­ing to Flood Fore­cast­ing Di­vi­sion, Lahore, Sun­day’s trough of West­erly Wave over Kash­mir and ad­join­ing ar­eas had moved away east­wards and a fresh West­erly Wave lay over north­ern Afghanistan. Sea­sonal Low lay over north­west­ern Balochis­tan and Sun­day’s Mon­soon Low over North Bay of Ben­gal lay over Jharkand (In­dia).

As pre­dicted by the Flood Fore­cast­ing Di­vi­sion, mainly dry weather is ex­pected over most parts of the coun­try dur­ing next 24 hours. How­ever, iso­lated thun­der­show­ers may oc­cur over the up­per catch­ments of all ma­jor rivers in­clud­ing Kash­mir, North and North­east­ern Pun­jab (Rawalpindi & Gu­jran­wala Di­vi­sions), D G Khan and Malakand di­vi­sions dur­ing the same pe­riod.

Scat­tered thun­der­storm/ rain of mod­er­ate in­ten­sity with one or two heavy falls is also ex­pected over up­per parts of the coun­try on Wednesday. Ac­cord­ing to Pro­vin­cial Disaster Man­age­ment Au­thor­ity, Gov­ern­ment of Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa, tor­ren­tial rain/cloud burst hit Ur­soon (Paita­sun Gol) south-west of Chi­tral on July 2 evening, which re­sulted in flash floods in the stream lo­cated near Pak-Afghan bor­der. As a re­sult, a mosque, Pak Army check post and near-by houses were re­port­edly washed away.
