Geelani demands Kashmiri detainees release before Eid Anti-India demos in Srinagar, Kulgam, Pulwama
SRINAGAR—In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali Geelani, has demanded release of all illegally detained Kashmiris including Hurriyet leaders and activists before Eid-ulFitr.
Syed Ali Geelani in a statement issued in Srinagar expressed serious concern over the arrest spree unleashed by Indian police across the territory. He said that instead of releasing the people who had been detained on fake charges, the police were arresting more and more youth to deprive them of celebrating the Eid with their families. He said that relatives of the arrested youth had told him that the police were making these detentions to extort money in lieu of the release of the detainees.
Hurriyet leaders, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Yasmeen Raja, Farooq Ahmed Tawheedi and Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, in their separate statements issued in Srinagar also denounced the crackdown launched by Indian police and troops against innocent youth across the terri- tory ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. They urged the Kashmiri people to celebrate the auspicious occasion with austerity and share the Eid joys with the families of martyrs, detainees and other victims of Indian state terrorism.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, Lawyers’ Club, Kashmir Freedom Movement and Voice of Victims organised a demonstration at Press Enclave in Srinagar against the continued illegal detention and house arrest of Hurriyet leaders including Zafar Akbar Butt. The protesters were led by Abdul Qadeer Dar, Advocate Babar Qadri, Ruqaya Baji, Rauf Khan and Musaddiq Meraj. The demonstrators called for immediate release of all Kashmiri detainees languishing in different jails.
People staged forceful demonstrations in Srinagar, Kulgam and Pulwama areas against the highhandedness of the police.
The protesters shouted high-pitched anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. Hurriyet leaders, Hakeem Abdur Rasheed, Bashir Ahmed Qureshi and Muhammad Yousuf Falahi addressing various functions in Srinagar and Shopian said that the Kashmiri people would take the ongoing freedom movement to its logical conclusion at all cost.—KMS
