The National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) has set up a Basement Playhouse especially designed for intimate performances. The inauguration ceremony was held on 29th January 2017 and was well attended by many notables such as Javed Jabbar, Arshad Mahmood and many others. At the Basement Playhouse, the audience mingles with the performers quite casually.

On the occasion, Zia Mohyeddin presented readings of poetry and prose in a style that he calls “Parhant.” He emphasized the need for learning the intonation as well as correct pronunciation to master the art of reading. Later, the audience got a treat when Ustad Nafees played the sitar accompanied by Bashir Khan on tabla.
