People Need Better Nutrition
Implementation of the Pakistan MultiSectoral Nutrition Strategy and Provincial Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategies was discussed at a roundtable session hosted in Islamabad by SUN Secretariat, Pakistan in collaboration with SUN Civil Society Alliance (CSA) and Nutrition International.
Dr. Naseer Muhammad Nizamani, Country Director, Nutrition International spoke on the achievements of Civil Society Alliance and the role it has played for implementation of provincial multi-sectoral nutrition strategies and nutrition specific legislation.
Dr. Azeem Khan, Member Food Security and Climate Change, Planning Commission, said he was happy that the importance of malnutrition was being recognized. Mr. Muhammad Aslam Shaheen, Chief of Nutrition at the Planning Commission spoke on the salient features of the Pakistan MultiSectoral Nutrition Strategy.
The Provincial SUN Focal persons from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, Balochistan, FATA, GB and AJK provided updates about the implementation status of the Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategies and spoke of the challenges and future directions.
Dr. Baseer Achakzai, Director Nutrition, MoNHSR&C, said Pakistan has invested many resources in nutrition. He said there was increasing focus on ignored and vulnerable areas such as FATA, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Ms. Samia Liaquat Ali Khan from the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) assured all stakeholders of the continued and proactive role of SUNCSA, Pak. She said that CSA will be closely coordinating with the government and other SUN Networks.
Barrister Syed Zafar Ali Shah appreciated SUNCSA for initiating a debate on implementation of multi-sectoral nutrition strategies.
Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, Secretary, Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform, highlighted the resolve and commitment of the Pakistan government in addressing malnutrition in the country and said the problem needed immediate focus at all levels.
