As­sist­ing the Mal­dives

Asian De­vel­op­ment Bank’s as­so­ci­a­tion with the Mal­dives for the last sev­eral years has as­sisted de­vel­op­ment of in­fra­struc­ture fa­cil­i­ties, sec­tor pol­icy re­forms, pro­vided as­sis­tance for ca­pac­ity de­vel­op­ment for var­i­ous line min­istries, and sup­ported pri­vate sec­tor de­vel­op­ment. ADB’s cur­rent port­fo­lio com­prises nine on­go­ing loans with a net loan amount of $83.38 mil­lion (as of 31 De­cem­ber 2009). The loans in­clude In­for­ma­tion Tech­nol­ogy De­vel­op­ment, Outer Is­lands Elec­tri­fi­ca­tion, Em­ploy­ment Skills Train­ing, Tsunami Emer­gency As­sis­tance Pro­ject, Re­gional De­vel­op­ment Pro­ject (Phase II): En­vi­ron­men­tal In­fra­struc­ture and Man­age­ment, Do­mes­tic Mar­itime Trans­port, Pri­vate Sec­tor De­vel­op­ment, Eco­nomic Re­cov­ery Pro­gram, and Ca­pac­ity De­vel­op­ment for Eco­nomic Re­cov­ery Pro­gram. ADB has been by far the main con­trib­u­tor to the power sec­tor in the coun­try, hav­ing ex­tended four loans of more than $30 mil­lion and six projects to­tal­ing $1.4 mil­lion. ADB also fo­cuses to ru­ral elec­tri­fi­ca­tion in the outer is­lands. The Bank has also as­sisted the Mal­dives to fa­cil­i­tate the in­tro­duc­tion of re­new­able en­ergy tech­nolo­gies that con­trib­ute to en­vi­ron­men­tal con­ser­va­tion
