N for Nano

Southasia - - -

Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world, was launched in Nepal last month, almost three years after being released in neighboring India. Available for NRS 7.98 lakh, the car will be the cheapest one yet to be sold in the country.

Boasting mileage of 23.6 km per liter, the car has been labeled as a ‘dream car’ by officials at Tata Motors. According to Johnny Ommen, Tata Motors’ chief of international business and passenger vehicles, “The Tata Nano still offers magical price value in Nepal. Many people who could not think of four-wheelers can now think of this magic car.”

The price of the Nano car in Nepal is three times that of its price in India. This is mainly because of the heavy customs and excise duty imposed on its imports which amounts to almost 240 percent.

India’s export of the Tata Nano car to Nepal is seen as an attempt to enhance trade relations between the two countries. The vehicles will be available in Nepal from July. ◆
