Pak­istan and In­dia re­cently con­cluded the sixth level of bi­lat­eral talks fo­cus­ing on ‘Re­duc­ing the Risk from Ac­ci­dents Re­lat­ing to Nu­clear Weapons,’ for the next five years. The ex­pert-led talks served as the first round of the Joint Work­ing Group of South Asia, re­vived dur­ing the SAARC sum­mit two months ago in the Mal­dives.

The del­e­ga­tions dis­cussed Con­fi­dence Build­ing Mea­sures (CBMS) re­lat­ing to their re­spec­tive nu­clear weapons and also agreed to co­op­er­ate on fur­ther CBMS. Dur­ing the talks, both sides dis­cussed the pos­si­bil­ity of mu­tu­ally ex­pand­ing the agree­ment on ad­vance no­ti­fi­ca­tion of bal­lis­tic mis­siles. The two nu­clear armed coun­tries, key play­ers in the South Asian re­gion, also dis­cussed mea­sures to avoid a Fukushima-like cri­sis that re­cently oc­curred in Ja­pan.

Apart from reach­ing an agree­ment on nu­clear as­sets, re­de­ploy­ment of heavy ma­chin­ery on the LOC, preven­tion of in­ci­dents at sea and the re­turn of cit­i­zens who in­ad­ver­tently cross the bor­der were also dis­cussed.
