Ac­cord­ing to UN as­sess­ments, the Mal­di­vian di­vorce rate is 10.97 divorces per 1000 in­hab­i­tants ev­ery year; three times higher than the av­er­age in Asia Pa­cific coun­tries.

Sta­tis­tics show that in 2000, 3,829 marriages and 1,928 divorces were reg­is­tered in the Mal­dives. In or­der to ad­dress the grow­ing so­cial prob­lem,
