Your ar­ti­cle ‘Re­birth of an In­dus­try’ raised a good is­sue. It is heart­en­ing to see the swift­ness with which the gov­ern­ment of Bangladesh acted to make changes in the la­bor laws. This step was taken af­ter the Rana Plaza tragedy oc­curred. The over­haul in la­bor laws came in July 2013 – only two months af­ter the ac­ci­dent. It shows that the gov­ern­ment of Bangladesh is con­cerned about its peo­ple. Sim­i­lar tragedies oc­curred in Pak­istan in Septem­ber 2012 when two fac­to­ries in Karachi and La­hore caught fire on a sin­gle day.

It has been one year since the ac­ci­dents hap­pened. Yet, no laws have been made to avoid such tragedies in fu­ture. The laws that are al­ready in place are hardly im­ple­mented. It is time the gov­ern­ment of Pak­istan learnt
