Operation cleanup

Southasia - - BRIEFINGS -

After months of speculations, the Pakistan Army finally launched a military offensive against terrorists in the North Waziristan Agency. What prompted the operation perhaps was the December 18 suicide bomb attack on a military checkpoint in North Waziristan in which three soldiers were killed. While the military claimed that more than 30 militants, most of them ethnic Uzbeks, were killed in the operation, residents of the area claimed that many among the dead were civilians. North Waziristan has allegedly been a hotbed of terrorists, especially those who came from Central Asian countries to fight the Afghan jihad and stayed in the tribal areas of Pakistan.
