Re­group­ing Rebels

Thearmed forces of Sri Lanka killed three LTTE sus­pects who were al­legedly try­ing to re­vive the rebel move­ment in the coun­try’s North­ern Prov­ince. Sri Lanka’s de­fence es­tab­lish­ment has ex­pressed con­cern over a pos­si­ble re­group­ing of the LTTE, five years af­ter the Sri Lankan armed forces de­feated them. The Sri Lankan po­lice has ar­rested 60 per­sons, largely from the is­land’s Tamil-speak­ing north, over the last two months.

The Sri Lankan mil­i­tary has raised

sur­veil­lance mea­sures in the North­ern Prov­ince, af­ter the UNHRC adopted a res­o­lu­tion against Sri Lanka, which calls for an in­ter­na­tional probe into the al­leged war crimes and rights abuses com­mit­ted by the Sri Lankan Army. Res­i­dents in the North­ern Prov­ince have been rais­ing con­cerns about heavy mil­i­ta­riza­tion there af­ter the war.
