If democ­racy is what hap­pened on June 17, 2014 in Model Town, La­hore, then the peo­ple can do with­out it. Gen. Pervez Mushar­raf is de­scribed as a ‘dic­ta­tor’ but never in his rule were peo­ple put to as much in­con­ve­nience and sub­jected to as many hard­ships as they have been un­der sub­se­quent ‘demo­cratic’ dis­pen­sa­tions. Be­nazir Bhutto used to say, ‘Democ­racy is the best re­venge.’ Pak­istan now has a democ­racy - but who is the re­venge against? The peo­ple of Pak­istan?
