Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ah­madzai has been elected the new pres­i­dent of Afghanistan while Dr. Ab­dul­lah Ab­dul­lah has be­come the coun­try’s chief ex­ec­u­tive and to­gether they will form a na­tional unity gov­ern­ment. They were con­grat­u­lated by out­go­ing Pres­i­dent Hamid Karzai, who also hailed the Afghan na­tion for its pa­tience, say­ing that the peo­ple of Afghanistan have proved their po­lit­i­cal ma­tu­rity.

U. S. Pres­i­dent Barack Obama also spoke with pres­i­dent- elect Ah­madzai and CEO- des­ig­nate Dr. Ab­dul­lah to con­grat­u­late them on con­clud­ing their agree­ment for a gov­ern­ment of na­tional unity and safe­guard­ing the first demo­cratic and peace­ful trans­fer of lead­er­ship in Afghanistan’s his­tory.

UN Sec­re­tary Gen­eral Ban Ki­moon, the United Na­tions Se­cu­rity Coun­cil, Cana­dian For­eign Af­fairs Min­is­ter John Baird and a num­ber of world lead­ers also wel­comed the de­vel­op­ment.
