Housing the Homeless
Sri Lanka and Pakistan share a warm relationship which was further strengthened during the final months of the civil insurgency in Sri Lanka when Pakistan lent its full support to the Sri Lankan armed forces to fight the rebel groups. The war has ended but the process of rehabilitation of the people affected during the war continues.
To show its commitment to the Sri Lankan government’s rehabilitation efforts, the government of Pakistan launched a Pakistan Housing Project in the Puthukkudiyiruppu village in Sri Lanka for the war-affected homeless people of the Northern Province. The project will help 230 homeless families from Puthukkudiyiruppu, Narikaddu and Moddaikadai villages. The cost of the houses will be borne by the Government of Pakistan, while roads, electricity and other external facilities will be provided by the government of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Minister of Commerce, Basil Rajapaksa also announced a matching grant by his government for the construction of an additional 230 houses for homeless families.
