Marble Trade

Southasia - - BRIEFINGS -

Afghanistan is a rich country when it comes to natural resources. According to the Afghan Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the country has marble deposits of over nine billion tons. Sadly though, it imports 80 percent of its marble from Pakistan. This may be due to the fact that investment in the marble sector has been quite inadequate so far mainly because of lack of transportation facilities and modern machinery.

Realizing the importance and potential of the marble industry, the government of Afghanistan is now making efforts to attract domestic and foreign investors to invest in the extraction of marbles. Investment in the sector will also create many jobs.

Most of the marble deposits are located in Nangarhar, Herat and Helmand. Currently, some 100 companies are producing and processing marbles in Afghanistan.
