Gross Na­tional Hap­pi­ness has at­tracted the fo­cus of the World Bank which is ex­plor­ing the po­ten­tial use of the con­cept. Dur­ing a visit to Bhutan, the World Bank’s Se­nior Vice Pres­i­dent Kaushik Basu, who is also the chief econ­o­mist with the Bank, lauded the coun­try’s pi­o­neer­ing role in the “in­cor­po­ra­tion of holis­tic di­men­sions in devel­op­ment phi­los­o­phy” and said that Bhutan could be a model coun­try for the rest of the world.

“We are ex­plor­ing ar­eas where Bhutan and the World Bank can col­lab­o­rate be­cause we are now in­ter­ested in the broader as­pects of the eco­nomic di­men­sions of devel­op­ment,” he said. Basu praised Bhutan for its ef­forts to de­crease poverty, say­ing that Bhutan’s poverty fall was sharper than that of China whose poverty rate is less than 6 per­cent.
