Among the 209 countries that compete for FIFA, the Bhutanese football team is ranked 209th. However, Bhutan won the first match against Sri Lanka in Colombo where they scored 1-0. In the second match for FIFA World Cup 2018, Bhutan was victorious with a score of 2-0 against Sri Lanka.
Some 20,000 people were present at the Changlimithang Stadium to watch the match. The tables turned during the final minutes in favour of Bhutan. The only professional player in the team, Chencho Gyeltshen, scored the second goal against Sri Lanka. Chencho is a pilot by profession and plays football as a sport in his free time. The rest of the Bhutanese football team consists of students. As the world’s lowest ranked football team, Bhutan will now compete against the soccer teams of Japan, South Korea and Australia.
