Level Playing Field

Southasia - - EDITOR’S MAIL -

Aung San Suu Kyi’s name has attained worldwide recognition, thanks to her efforts towards ensuring the establishment of democracy and peace in the country. Unfortunately, her hard work and achievements have been lost on Myanmar’s government which has tried its utmost to dissuade her from entering mainstream politics. Ironically, its efforts have resulted in Aung San Suu Kyi’s popularity to rise exponentially.

I agree with the writer’s suggestion of allowing Aung San Suu Kyi to contest for the presidential elections in the country as this will guarantee a level playing field for all candidates as well as ensure that the people of Myanmar are able to vote for the candidate of their choice. Any attempt to stop her from being a part of the elections will be seen as a deliberate attempt at keeping her away, which will ultimately increase her popularity even further.
