On the Ball
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, a 23 year old youth, is the first Indian to play for a top tier European football club. He played as the goalkeeper for Stabaek FC in a Norwegian Cup game in Sandefjord and maintained a 6-0 score in a recent match.
Gurpreet’s benchmark surpasses Indian football players like Mohammad Salim, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Pal. They played competitive matches too for various teams outside India, but could not appear in the top divisions of European football clubs. Ever since Gurpreet joined the Norwegian team for a three year contract, he has been playing as the second fiddle to Sayouba Mande, who plays for the Ivory Coast. Trained by Bob Bradley and the goalkeeping coach, Espen Granli, Gurpreet is soon to play for football standards that are much higher in the European club.
