Tree Record

Southasia - - BRIEFS -

Bhutan has broken the Guinness World Record for the highest number of trees planted in a specific period. An Indian team had the record 3 years ago - 10,000 trees planted in one hour. A team of 100 volunteers in Bhutan managed to plant up to 49,672 trees in just one hour. The event took place in the country’s capital, Thimpu.

According to the tree planting event organizer, Karma Tshering, the event was planned to honour the love the country’s former king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, had for the environment. The team practiced for a week prior to the event which, according to one volunteer, Sherub Dorji, helped build physical strength as well as improve planting technique. According to senior journalist, Namgay Zam, team members managed to plant at least 8 trees per minute, that too on steep and unfriendly terrain.
