The

pro­vin­cial gov­ern­ment of Khy­ber Pakhtunkhwa has launched a re­for­esta­tion cam­paign called “Bil­lion Tree Tsunami ( BTT)” to in­crease the to­tal forested area from 20% to 22% by plant­ing 1 bil­lion trees by the end of 2018. The pro­ject is aimed at restor­ing de­for­ested land. The KPK gov­ern­ment has al­ready planted 18 mil­lion trees this year and around 250 mil­lion seedlings will be planted in com­ing months. Un­der the drive, the gov­ern­ment will es­tab­lish 20,000 nurs­eries to ob­tain over 500 mil­lion seedlings, while spe­cial train­ing will be pro­vided to lo­cal youth to help them be­come ‘eco-preneurs’. Pak­istan has one of the high­est rates of de­for­esta­tion in Asia. The mega ini­tia­tive will help the coun­try re­duce flood­ing and soil ero­sion, in­crease wa­ter re­serves and mul­ti­ply agri­cul­tural pro­duc­tion.
