Bal­loon In­ter­net

has signed an agree­ment with the Sri Lankan gov­ern­ment to de­ploy a bal­loon-based in­ter­net net­work in the coun­try. The pro­ject is called ‘Pro­ject Loon.’ The so­lar-pow­ered bal­loon will float 12 miles above the earth and will pro­vide im­me­di­ate in­ter­net con­nec­tiv­ity to the en­tire is­land. The sky-mounted Loon is a dis­tinct in­ter­net in­fra­struc­ture. Through this plat­form, Google will pro­vide an LTE-speed net­work to lo­cal tele­com op­er­a­tors in Sri Lanka who will share the sig­nal with users with­out us­ing any ca­bles. The net­work is a hun­dred times faster than fixed, ca­bled-based in­ter­net con­nec­tions. The pro­ject will be com­pletely de­ployed in 2016 and Sri Lanka will be­come first South Asian coun­try to use Google’s in­ter­net bal­loons.
