a cen­tral hill city in Sri Lanka, will be de­vel­oped as the first ‘Smart City' in the is­land. An ini­tia­tive of the Min­istry of Town Plan­ning and Wa­ter Resources, the pur­pose be­hind de­vel­op­ing a smart city is to drive so­cioe­co­nomic growth, cre­ate more em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties and en­able in­fras­truc­ture de­vel­op­ment us­ing in­for­ma­tion tech­nol­ogy. The core in­fras­truc­ture of the smart city will in­clude un­in­ter­rupted elec­tric­ity and wa­ter sup­ply, af­ford­able hous­ing, ef­fi­cient pub­lic trans­port, proper san­i­ta­tion with solid waste man­age­ment, health and ed­u­ca­tion and a sus­tain­able nat­u­ral en­vi­ron­ment with forestry and aqua­cul­ture.
