ge­ol­o­gist Bishal Upreti has won the CNR Rao Prize for 2015 for his con­tri­bu­tions to the in­ves­ti­ga­tion of stratig­ra­phy (rock lay­ers) and tec­ton­ics (plate move­ment). In his 40-year re­search, Upreti mapped ac­tive faults to build the chronol­ogy of his­toric and pre­his­toric earthquakes in the Nepali Hi­malayas. His find­ings are now be­ing used to eval­u­ate po­ten­tial seis­mic haz­ards in the re­gion. The CNR Rao prize ac­knowl­edges the high im­pact re­search by sci­en­tists from Least De­vel­oped Coun­tries (LDCs). Cur­rently, Bishal Upreti is co-ed­i­tor of sev­eral books on ge­ol­ogy and land­slide haz­ard man­age­ment and has writ­ten more than 75 re­search pa­pers.
