geologist Bishal Upreti has won the CNR Rao Prize for 2015 for his contributions to the investigation of stratigraphy (rock layers) and tectonics (plate movement). In his 40-year research, Upreti mapped active faults to build the chronology of historic and prehistoric earthquakes in the Nepali Himalayas. His findings are now being used to evaluate potential seismic hazards in the region. The CNR Rao prize acknowledges the high impact research by scientists from Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Currently, Bishal Upreti is co-editor of several books on geology and landslide hazard management and has written more than 75 research papers.
