Affordable Voice

Southasia - - BRIEFS -

Vishal Rao, an Indian oncologist and surgeon, has invented an artificial voice box ‘Aum’ to help throat cancer patients speak again. Priced at just Rs 50, the voice prosthesis device is a boon for those sufferers who have lost their voice, but cannot buy the highlyexpensive prosthesis device that is available at Rs 20,000 and has to be changed twice a year. In India, there are more than 1.5 lakh cases of tobacco-induced cancer, with one-third suffering from throat, head and neck cancer, which normally requires voice box removal during the treatment.
