Lanka has unveiled a Western Region Megapolis plan to attain the status of a developed country by 2020. It will promote economic productivity, attract investments, enhance business opportunities and create jobs. Approximately 2.1 million employment opportunities will be created to reduce the overall unemployment rate from 4 per cent to 2 per cent by 2020. The contribution of small and medium enterprises in economic development will be increased from 50 to 60 per cent. The plan is based on four pillars - social equity and harmony, economic growth and prosperity, environmental sustainability and individual happiness.
