In­dian govern­ment will pro­vide free LPG con­nec­tions to BPL (be­low poverty line) house­holds to en­sure uni­ver­sal cov­er­age of cook­ing gas, par­tic­u­larly in the ru­ral ar­eas. As an­nounced in the Union Bud­get 2016, the govern­ment has al­lo­cated Rs 1000 crore for a 2-year scheme, which will cover a to­tal of 5 crore house­holds be­low the poverty line. Pro­vid­ing smoke-free gas to the poor ru­ral ar­eas, the scheme will re­duce the time spent on cook­ing and will also gen­er­ate thou­sands of em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties for the ru­ral pop­u­la­tion.
