Big Breakthrough

Southasia - - BRIEFS -

Agroup of Pakistani researchers has discovered some 30 genes that cause intellectual disability and mental retardation, which is relatively high in the country owing to cousin marriages. A team of 12 researchers from the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University ( SZABMU) of Islamabad made the landmark breakthrough in collaboration with American and Dutch scientists. The medical breakthrough paves the way for neurological medicine, diagnostic procedures and preventive measures to reduce autosomal recessive intellectual disability ( ARID) and other mental ailments and hereditary diseases in the local population. The research has been published in Nature’s Molecular Psychiatry, a prestigious research journal with an impact factor of 13.3.
