Satel­lite Am­bi­tions

To fi­nance the coun­try's first-ever satel­lite ‘Banga­bandhu-I,’ the Bangladeshi gov­ern­ment has signed a loan agree­ment of $180 mil­lion with the Hongkong and Shang­hai Bank­ing Cor­po­ra­tion (HSBC). The Bangladesh gov­ern­ment has al­ready pur­chased a 119.1 east lon­gi­tude or­bital slot from the In­ter­sput­nik In­ter­na­tional Or­ga­ni­za­tion of Space Com­mu­ni­ca­tions for a pe­riod of 15 years. Bangladesh is plan­ning to launch its satel­lite in De­cem­ber 2017, be­com­ing the 54th mem­ber of the ex­clu­sive club of satel­lite-own­ing coun­tries. With the launch, it will be the fourth South Asian coun­try to have launched a satel­lite af­ter Pak­istan, Sri Lanka and India.
