Com­piled by the Com­mon­wealth Sec­re­tariat, the Global Youth De­vel­op­ment In­dex (YDI) for 2016 has ranked Sri Lanka as the world’s 31st top-per­form­ing coun­try in terms of youth de­vel­op­ment. In the lat­est YDI re­sults, Sri Lanka has also emerged as the lead­ing coun­try in South Asia, fol­lowed by Bhutan (69), Nepal (77), In­dia (133), Bangladesh (146), Pak­istan (154) and Afghanistan (167). The YDI is based on some 18 indi­ca­tors that mea­sure a coun­try’s over­all per­for­mance, progress and the con­di­tions it of­fers to its young pop­u­la­tions in such five ba­sic ar­eas as em­ploy­ment, ed­u­ca­tion, health, civic and po­lit­i­cal par­tic­i­pa­tion.
