Golden Vi­ta­min

Agroup of sci­en­tists in Bangladesh has suc­cess­fully de­vel­oped Golden Rice, a vi­ta­min A-rich rice va­ri­ety that can suc­cess­fully ad­dress vi­ta­min-A de­fi­ciency (VAD) in the coun­try. De­vel­oped by the Bangladesh Rice Re­search In­sti­tute (BRRI), the grains of Golden Rice ac­cu­mu­late beta carotene, a sub­stance that is the main source of vi­ta­min A, which is es­sen­tial for vi­sion, im­mune sys­tem func­tion and for the over­all growth and devel­op­ment of the hu­man body. Ac­cord­ing to sta­tis­tics of WHO, nearly 24 per cent of preg­nant women in Bangladesh are vi­ta­min A-de­fi­cient and one in ev­ery five pre-school chil­dren suf­fers from VAD.
