Agroup of Pak­istani stu­dents has de­vel­oped ‘Ammi Ser­vice’, a voice mes­sag­ing ap­pli­ca­tion to help preg­nant moth­ers get health care as­sis­tance on­line on their mo­bile phones. De­vel­oped by Is­raa Nasir and Kamil Shafiq, the app aims to re­duce ma­ter­nal and in­fant mor­tal­ity in Pak­istan which has one of the high­est in­fant mor­tal­ity rates in the world. Through the app, a preg­nant mother re­ceives reg­u­lar mes­sages based on nu­tri­tional in­for­ma­tion, warn­ing signs and sug­gested health behaviours oc­cur­ring at each stage of preg­nancy. The UK Depart­ment for In­ter­na­tional De­vel­op­ment has pro­vided a grant of over Rs1.25 mil­lion to the pro­ject.
