Mega Ir­ri­ga­tion

The gov­ern­ment of Bhutan has un­veiled the coun­try’s largest ir­ri­ga­tion chan­nel in Yoe­seltse Ge­wog in Samtse, the largest rice-pro­duc­ing district of Bhutan. Cover­ing some 956 acres of paddy fields, the 7.2 kilo­me­tre ‘Khuchid­i­ana Ir­ri­ga­tion Chan­nel’ will in­crease pro­duc­tion of sea­sonal crops and will also en­cour­age farm­ers to prac­tice dou­ble crop­ping, such as wheat, rice, mus­tard, veg­eta­bles, etc. It will ben­e­fit hun­dreds of farm­ers who mainly rely on sub­sis­tence farm­ing and agri­cul­ture for their liveli­hood. Built en­tirely with for­eign col­lab­o­ra­tion at a cost of Nu 63.2 mil­lion, the chan­nel is also the big­gest agri­cul­tural project of the Samtse District.
