Tree Tsunami

Southasia - - BRIEFS -

The government of Bangladesh is going to plant 1 million palm trees by June in 2017 to absorb lightning damage and reduce overall fatalities and injuries caused by lightning strikes. Tree plantation is a measure being taken by the Bangladesh government to address the lightning issue, which is mostly the result of rising deforestation and environmental degradation. In 2016, more than 200 people died in Bangladesh owing to excessive lightning, which was declared a natural disaster because of its high magnitude and frequency. A couple of years earlier, Thailand successfully launched a similar programme.
