Message of H.E Mr. Javier CARBAJOSA SÁNCHEZ

The Diplomatic Insight - - National Day of the Kingdom of Spain -

On the coming October 12, National Day of Spain will be celebrated, which marks the special historical relationship that Spain has for centuries with the American Continent. On the occasion of this date, I would like to convey a message of affection and friendship to the people of Pakistan, from the government and the people of Spain. Relations between Spain and Pakistan have always been very cordial and have existed since 1951. The Embassy of Spain in Pakistan opened its doors in 1952, has remained open throughout these years, and has always tried to promote the political, economic and trade relationships, as well as other cultural, academic etc, that result in better understanding and increased ties between our two countries. From my recent arrival in this country in midJuly, and in the course of my contacts with both the government and the Pakistani society, I have clearly detected a flow of sympathy and friendship, towards everything Spanish. From this perspective, the Spanish Embassy will work with redoubled intensity to translate into concrete and tangible terms the potential possibilities of relationship between the two countries.I gather that this special warmth coming from Pakistan towards Spain is a result of many factors. I guess that Spanish success in sports, the echoes of a large Pakistani community in Spain or historical links between Spain and Islam have something to do with it. As for Pakistanis living in Spain, this community is over 100,000 people, who have been well integrated into the society and contribute to the economic and social development of the community in which they live bringing its own cultural richness and diversity, as it happens in the globalized world of today. There are also numerous possibilities between Spain and Pakistan to enlarge our commercial and economical relations. Let me remind you that, despite the serious economic problems many countries of the "Eurozone" face (and Spain is no exception), the Spanish economy is still in terms of GDP, the fourth largest economy in the Eurozone and the fifth largest in Europe. In this context, the work of Spanish companies abroad, contribute substantially to the implementation of the Spain's program of economic recovery. Letmeoffer some examples: a) In the field of renewable energies, Spain is a world leader, both for having developed certain technologies in our country, and because it has an industrial fabric with leading companies based throughout theworld. Spain is the first country in Europe in production of wind power, and the fourth worldwide in terms of installed capacity. Spanish companies spearhead reverse osmosis technologies and the construction of desalination plants. Seven of the 20 largest international desalination companies are Spanish. i) In the field of other industrial sectors, Spain is Europe's third manufacturer of machine tools. j) In the field of distribution and fashion, the world's largest fashion distribution group, with a unique product strategy that is studied at the best business schools in the world is Spanish. k) In the field of publishing industry, Spain ranks fourth in theworld. l) In the field of food and agriculture sector, a Spanish company is the leading world producer of rice, and the second of pasta. Spain is the top producer and exporter of olive oil. We are world leaders in producing and marketing table olives. We are the world's top exporter of fruit and vegetables. m) In the field of tourism, Spain's leading position is undisputed, Spain is the world's top holiday tourism destination, and the second most visited country in the world. All this is just a sample of possibilities opened now for the better future of our cooperation. Therefore and to conclude, I would like to encourage all our friends in Pakistan to get closer to Spain, its reality, its possibilities, and to explore theways inwhich we can work together taking into account our mutual interest.
